One thing that computer owners need to stay ready for is the old computer slow-down. The older your computer is, the more likely you are to experience this. But regardless of how old it is, it’s the nature of the beast. If you want to know why this happens, then here it is. The fact is, there are several things that can cause you computer to slow down. Some of these are viruses, hackers, and spyware. Once you pick up a virus, your computer will slow down. Your only recourse is to instigate some kind of repair. For Trojans and other viruses, you need to have a good anti-virus program to get rid of them. You can either buy one or get one online for free.
But when you’re diagnosing the slow-down, remember it’s not always due to a virus. It can also be from not performing the necessary maintenance. This means running the defragment program, or fixing disk errors, or having too many programs on your startup. You could also have many other totally unnecessary programs using up all your RAM. And the longer you have your computer, the more this stuff builds up and collects, and will slow your computer down. And you need to react by performing some actions to repair it. Clean your computer up.
To do this you can remove programs that rarely get used. You can put some of your files onto a CD or an external hard drive like maybe a flash drive. Once you get them transferred, it’s recommended that you run the ‘Disk Cleanup’ program. This program will finish the cleanup process and compact your old files to create more disk space.
If you run lots of games on your computer, then this could be the cause of your slow-down. If you have some that you don’t run very often, or even rarely, then now would be a good time to just remove them. This will lighten the load on your computer. Fine tune all the software programs either manually or with the aid of a third party software.
The culprit may also be ‘disk errors’. You can take care of this by running ‘CHKDSK’ while in ‘Safe Mode’, or you can access it on the Recovery Console. Use the System File Checker to see if there are any damaged or altered critical files. The checker is important because it discovers files that have been damaged or altered in some way. Then your system will restore the file to its proper version. In order to run this program, you need to log on as the ‘Administrator’.
